Street food focus: Mike’s Peckham

Henry Norman samples the most hyped dishes on the high street. Are they more than just a flash in the pan

What?

N’duja, roasted pepper, ricotta, finocchiona, pickled chilli pizza slice.

Where?
Mike’s Peckham operates out of one outlet in, er, Peckham (it’s also on Deliveroo).

How much?
£4.50 per slice.

The menu says:
‘N’duja, roasted pepper, ricotta, finocchiona, pickled chilli’ (funnily enough).

The hype says:
“Utterly delicious”: The Guardian; one of Time Out’s best new restaurants of 2021; “A real flavour celebration”: Google review.

We say:
Dine Out devotees will already be au fait with this Peckham-based pizza purveyor. Despite having been open for less than a year, it was crowned the winner at our sister title’s recent National Pizza Awards.

Something of a hidden gem, Mike’s is tucked away in an industrial area in an old warehouse, its understated interior being somewhat at odds with the ostentatious eats. The menu is also deceptively simple, with a rotating roster of slices competing for your attention, or you can get a wooden board with a slice of each for £28.

Those onboard during our visit included the recommended (if available) ‘caramelised red onion, robiola, honey, walnuts’, which perfectly illustrates the policy of teaming less likely toppings together on the Roman-style twice-baked bases – the award-winning n’duja slice being the highlight.

One of Mike’s more carnivorous creations, the simplicity of the almost bread-like base provides the perfect building block for the almost over the top adornments, with the n’duja and pickled chilli chiefly competing for your tastebuds’ attention. This heavenly creation is especially worth witnessing on a Sunday – it turned out all pizzas were half-price when we visited.

Should you believe the hype?
The slice is right.
