Strike continues for food delivery drivers

Drivers for food delivery platforms plan to strike in pay dispute every Friday and Bank Holiday.

The latest round of delivery protests will see riders across England refuse to pick-up delivery orders from 5-10pm on affected days.

The drivers for food delivery platforms, including Deliveroo, Just Eat and Uber Eats plan to continue striking every Friday and Bank Holiday until the pay dispute reaches an agreement. There are over 5,000 drivers set to participate in the strikes. This comes after two similar walkouts happened in the month of February, including on Valentines Day.

Marcio Silva, organiser of the strikes and delivery driver said: "Strikes will continue every Friday and Bank Holiday until they increase the money they pay riders. At the moment, Uber pays a minimum of £2.80 and Deliveroo pays £3.15. We need a minimum of £5."

Riders for food delivery platforms are often classified as self-employed contractors, which means their employers are not legally obligated to pay them the statutory National Living Wage. Delivery firms insist many earn above the living wage on average.

In response to the latest strike action, an Uber Eats spokesperson said: "We offer a flexible way for couriers to earn by using the app when and where they choose. We know that the vast majority of couriers are satisfied with their experience on the app, and we regularly engage with couriers to look at how we can improve their experience."

While a Just Eat spokesperson has said that its pay structure is regularly reviewed.
